Flipper Fingers are dunnage components which are designed to flip into a position holding the part in proper position within the container. They are flipped the opposite way in order to remove the part from the container. They can be arranged in a vertical array within a Flipper Tower Assembly to hold parts in a horizontal orientation supporting the weight of each part, or in a horizontal array, pivoting on a pipe to hold parts in an upright vertical orientation. They can be designed for both manual and robotic loading/unloading of parts. Counterweights, springs, and other features can be engineered for the purposes of automatically actuating the next flipper to accept another part.
Typical applications for vertical style Flipper Fingers are vehicle roof panels, floor pans, sunroof assemblies, and EV battery trays held in vehicle position. Typical applications for horizontal style Flipper Fingers are vehicle hoods, lift-gates, doors, floor pans, headliners, bodyside stampings windshields and rear windows held in an upright position.
In many applications, the flipper will be made from a strong, rigid material such as polycarbonate alloy or nylon, but include a softer material such as thermoplastic elastomer (TPE) for cushioning properties or thermoplastic urethane (TPU) for cut and abrasion resistance properties in the areas where it makes contact with the part. Alternatively, in areas where there is high probability for cutting or abrasion to the plastic dunnage due to a sharp metal edge of the part being held, a stainless steel wear plate can be attached to the Flipper Finger in order to eliminate the issue.
